Whilst it is the responsibility of the employer to carry out an assessment of first aid needs within the business, the HSE Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) does offer some guidance.
Consideration in respect of both personnel and first aid equipment has to be given to some of the following items:
- How many staff are employed?
- The layout of the building, is it spread over a large area or on many levels?
- Is shift work carried out requiring cover throughout all working hours?
- What types of activities are carried out? Are chemicals used or is dangerous machinery operated?
- What is the nature of the workforce?
- What is the past history of accidents?
- Is the site remote from medical services?
- Is sufficient cover available to cover annual leave or other absences?
